Although Tuesdays tryout was filled with tough conditioning, the day ended sweet as teammates surprised Co-Captain Jamel Morgan with a cake for his 18th Birthday. At the very end of tryouts, the cake was brought out and the entire group sang Happy Birthday. Everyone had a piece of cake before heading home for the night. Jamel’s Birthday wish? Well it was no secret, “I am wishing for a State Championship.”

This weekend twelve players involved in the Coronado Basketball Program donated their time and energy to the Jerome Williams Basketball Boot Camp. The camp was offered free to kids 5-15 years old and focused on skills and conditioning. More than a hundred kids age 5-9 showed up for the morning session, and eighty-five kids age 10-15 came for the afternoon session. Coronado players showed their great patience and personality, working all day to help others in the community. Once again we are very proud of our program. Immediately following the camp, the first official practice was held for Juniors and Seniors. Since there is not a roster selected until this Wednesday, the practice was open to all Juniors and Seniors. Coach Berg laid out plans for the offense, as the potential players got a good look at what’s to come this season.

THUNDER WIN IT ALL!

2008 Intramural Champions

It all came down to Wednesday afternoon as the 4-1 Celtics looked to avenge their only loss of the season to the 5-0 Thunder. The Celtics used the one-two combination of Jamel Morgan and Charlie Wakefield to control the tempo early, but after the Thunder took a 14-13 lead on a three pointer by Drew Badillo, they never looked back. The Thunders balanced scoring attack, four players in double figures, was to much for the Celtics to defend. The Thunder won 66-54 taking the crown as the 2008 Coronado High School Basketball Champions. Congratulations to Blake Smith, Austin Nelson, Adam Schmitt, Drew Badillo and Sam Staudaher.

SURPRISE!!!

Blake Smith and friends get ready for the cake at his surprise 18th Birthday Party.

Friends and family gathered Sunday afternoon to surprise Blake Smith on his 18th birthday.  Blake had no idea, and was shocked when he walked into his house to find it filled with partygoers.  After congratulating him, his friends wasted no time before throwing Blake in the pool.   Happy Birthday Blake!
